What is the theme in "The Enormous Radio" by Cheever?

The theme in "The Enormous Radio" by Cheever is a human tendency towards self-delusion. The story revolves around the characters Irene and Jim Westcott.

On the surface, the couple seems average with a love for music. The story unfolds, however, after they purchase a new radio that somehow captures conversations of their neighbors. Irene becomes fixated on the other couples' problems and feels superior to those around her. Towards the end of the story, Jim has an outburst that divulges some of Irene's own secrets and shows she is truly no better than those neighbors she had been judging for some time. Only in her imagination has she been superior.
