The World Health Organization has categorized the signs and symptoms associated with dementia into an early stage, middle stage and late stage. Each stage describes the progressive symptoms of dementia.

The first stage can easily be missed by both loved ones and physiciansdue to its slow onset; this stage is characterized by forgetfulness of time, names, familiar objects and places. The signs and symptoms become more evident and restricting in the middle stage. This stage is characterized by increased forgetfulness, poor concentration, difficulty with communication and general cognitive decline. People who have reached the last stage of dementia are usually completely dependent. Their memory gaps areobvious, and they often lose their psychomotor skills.
