As of 2014, Tibet is an autonomous region of China located in the Himalayas next to Nepal and Bhutan. It covers 1.2 million square kilometers, making it the second largest region of China. As of 2007, 2.81 million people lived in Tibet, mainly of the Tibetan ethnic group.
The population consists of a Buddhist majority whose spiritual leader is the Dalai Lama, seen as a reincarnation of his predecessor. The current Dalai Lama has lived in exile most of his life.
