Researchers determined that probiotic supplements are most effective when taken 30 minutes before or simultaneously with a meal, according to NutritionFacts.org. Time of day or dosage was not a factor in the research.
Researchers measured the survival and concentration of the probiotic bacteria throughout the entire digestive process, states NutritionFacts.org, by building a mock digestive system complete with a stomach, intestines and digestive fluids. They determined the best practice for taking probiotic supplements by comparing the survival rate and concentration of probiotic bacteria before, during and after a meal. Findings indicated that bacteria survival was greatest when probiotics were taken just prior to or with a meal.
