When is the best time to plant a Leyland cypress?

According to North Carolina State University extension office, the best time of year to plant a Leyland cypress is in late March, using plants that have been rooted the previous fall or winter. When planted, the trees should be spaced at least 4 to 8 feet apart, and sites with clay or hard soils should be layered with a nutrient-rich topsoil.
If Leylands are being planted as Christmas trees, the trees should be shaped in the field during the second year of new growth after they have turned hard. Weed and pest control is also important when caring for these trees with removal of affected plants being the best method to prevent the spread of disease.
