When is the best time of year to plant chrysanthemums?

The best time of year to plant chrysanthemums is in the spring if the gardener wants a perennial plant. If an annual plant is desired, chrysanthemums can be planted as late as fall.
Chrysanthemums planted in the fall rarely survive the winter, because their roots don't have time to establish themselves in the soil. The perennial chrysanthemums have the spring, summer and fall for the roots to establish themselves and are better able to withstand the winter.
Chrysanthemums do best in a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Clay soils need to be amended with compost to make them lighter, and the plant should be watered regularly.
