What time of year does summer-like weather begin in New Zealand?

Summer-like weather begins in New Zealand around December. The summer season is officially December through February because the country lies in the southern hemisphere, meaning that the seasons are reversed from those in the northern hemisphere. January and February have the hottest summer temperatures.
New Zealand's location makes its weather variable and unpredictable. While it is situated in the South Pacific, it is not primarily a tropical locale. The northern part of the country does get subtropical weather in the summers; however, it is not uncommon to start mornings with cool temperatures, moving into quite hot afternoons, and returning to cooler weather in the evenings.
