The Shettles method is a timing-related technique for conceiving a specific gender, according to Parenting magazine. Developed in the 1960s by Dr. Landrum Shettles, this method involves timing intercourse two or more days before ovulation to increase likelihood of a specific gender.

According to the Shettles method, female sperm travel slower than male sperm but live longer. Therefore, having sex on the most fertile day would likely result in a male baby, because the male sperm would reach the highly fertile egg first, explains Parenting. Having sex a few days before ovulation increases the chances of a girl.

Other, more high-tech methods of determining gender include in-vitro fertilization, sperm sorting and preimplantation genetic diagnosis, notes What to Expect.
