Measuring and analyzing the chosen load carefully are the most important factors when determining LTL freight class. The freight class for less than a truckload freight class is determined using cargo dimensions, density, ease of handling, value, and liability to theft, damage and spoilage.

Once the dimensions and packaging stability are determined, a table defines the official category from the 18 available options. These are based on value and danger as well as physical measurements, and selecting the correct category is important. Tables are available in book form from National Motor Freight Traffic Association or by using software such as ClassIT or Fast Class.
