What are some tips for feeding chickens?

Feed young chicks a starter feed, and then switch to a general feed when they become hens. When hens reach the age of laying eggs, increase the protein of the feed by 16 percent. This is when they are about 5 months old.

Look at the label of the store-bought feed to determine the protein count and for what age the feed is good. Starter feeds are clearly marked for young chicks. There are also medicated starter and general feeds for chickens that are ill. Scraps can also be added to chicken feed, including fruits and vegetable peels. Avoid raw potato peels and garlic. Supplemental foods for feed include grains, fish meal, bonemeal and bran.
