Some tips for getting discounts on Amtrak tickets are to join the train company's "Guest Rewards" program, book 14 days in advance and check the Amtrak website for weekly specials. Discounted tickets are sold from Tuesday to Friday each week and give passengers a 25 percent discount and in some cases have been reported to go as high as 80 percent off.

The Guest Rewards program award points for each journey taken and once enough are accumulated, can be redeemed for train tickets. Two points are normally given for every dollar spent and Amtrak runs specials, including double point days for select time periods.
