What are some tips for pruning evergreen trees?

With the exception of pine, prune all evergreen trees before the new spring growth starts or during the semi-dormant period in mid-summer. Prune pine trees during the period of new growth in the spring, and remove diseased or dying branches at any time.

Most evergreens have a strong central branch that reduces the need for pruning except for shaping the growth, controlling height or increasing the density of the branches. When pruning, follow the branches' general patterns to maintain the tree's natural shape. Selective pruning of one branch at a time is preferable to shearing, which can cause unnatural shapes that become difficult to maintain as the tree grows.
