What are some tips for replacing halogen bulbs?

The most important tip for replacing halogen bulbs is to never allow the bulb to contact human skin. Because halogen bulbs burn at a high temperature, the slightest oil from human skin on the glass can cause the bulb to burn out prematurely.
Before changing the bulb, turn the light switch off, and let the bulb cool for 15 minutes. Remove the old bulb, and check that the wattage and base construction match the replacement bulb. Halogen bulbs vary in wattage and construction, and they are not interchangeable. Xenon bulbs with matching wattage and base construction can be substituted for halogen bulbs. Xenon bulbs offer the advantage of lower heat output and extended life.
