What are some tips for taking senior portraits?

Taking senior portraits in an outdoor space with flattering natural lighting and including props that show the student’s interests and personality are two tips for getting memorable senior portraits. Mid-tone to dark colored tops in shades that flatter the student’s skin tone usually photograph better than pastels and prints.

Generally, the best time to take pictures outdoors is in the early morning or late afternoon. Sitting in front of a background that has some texture, such as a brick wall or tall grass, can add depth and visual interest to the portrait. Students who love sports, music or art may want to incorporate props, such as a basketball, musical instrument, art supplies or a favorite novel, into their portraits to show different sides of their personality.
