Is tithing a requirement in the Catholic church?

According to the fifth precept of the Catholic Church, members of the faith are obliged to help provide for the Church’s material needs. There is no fixed percentage or amount of income required; each member is simply called to, at the very least, give as he or she is able.

This tithe clause is put in place to ensure the maintenance of ministers and the upkeep of the parish. It is considered the very minimum a member can contribute. The precepts are established as a moral code that occupies the same realm as the Ten Commandments. To neglect one’s tithe is, therefore, a sin again the Church.
