"Dike" is a commonly used term in the electrical industry for a pair of diagonal-cutting pliers. Other names for these pliers include diagonal pliers and wire cutters. The term "dike" is also used as a verb when referring to cutting objects with these pliers.
Unlike standard pliers that grip and turn an object, diagonal cutters are used solely for cutting through varying thicknesses of aluminum, brass, copper, iron or steel wire. Most diagonal cutters are made with tempered steel and feature tapered or rounded noses to suit different uses. The handles of diagonal pliers made for electrical jobs have an insulated coating that provides some shock protection.
