Toyota of Hollywood was established on Oct. 31, 1957. The Japanese company hoped to make a splash in the American second-car market with its vehicles.
The Hollywood Toyota location became the American headquarters of the company. Toyota's cars were slow to catch on in the United States, and its flagship vehicle, the Toyopet Crown sedan, was a major flop. Later, Toyota released the Corona, a car made specifically for American drivers. The car featured air-conditioning, automatic transmission, carpeting, sun visors, armrests and tinted windows. The Corona became popular among Americans and set the stage for other Toyota models, such as the Corolla, to succeed
