Cedar Rapids Steel Transport was established in 1955 by Herald and Miriam Smith after their purchase of a refurbished chicken coop for $125. The first transportation deal made by the company involved empty trucks returning from Chicago to Cedar Rapids to carry steel after dropping off their cargo of livestock.

According to the company's website, its revenues exceed $1 billion as of 2015. The company also claims to have no debt and an asset count of more than 4,500 trucks. CRST is a family-owned business and has a management team with a total experience count of more than 250 years.
