The state of Georgia in the United States was officially established as a state on Jan. 2, 1788, and is the youngest among the 13 original states. Prior to achieving statehood, Georgia was founded in 1732 and had boundaries that included a large portion of both Mississippi and Alabama.
Prior to the Civil War, the state of Georgia contained the highest number of plantations in comparison to the other states in the South. The northern boundary of the state includes a portion of the Appalachian Mountains, while the Okefenokee Swamp is located in the south. The capital of Georgia is the city of Atlanta.
