How do you transfer embroidery designs onto fabric?

There are five different methods for embroidery transfer to fabric, and each method is dependent on what pattern is being embroidered. Some of the methods are for repeat patterns and some are for singular use patterns.

The five methods for transferring embroidery designs onto fabric are:

• Tracing
Tracings can be done with both light and dark fabrics, but the medium chosen will differ. Copy the design onto the tracing paper, and place the fabric over it. Placing in a sunny window can make it easier to trace for light colored fabrics. For darker colored fabrics, a chalk pencil will show up, and for light colored fabrics, any regular drawing utensil will work.
• Tracing paper or dressmaker's carbon
Almost the same concept as regular tracing paper, but backwards. This paper contains a type of waxy/chalky substance. Draw the design onto the back of the tracing paper. Place colored side down onto fabric. Using tracing wheel or stylus, press into the paper to deposit color outline onto fabric.
• Transfer paper
Transfer paper can be printed with individual designs and can be used to transfer the design onto fabric.
• Iron on
Iron on designs can be used to iron onto the fabric for a steady outline to embroider; however, the original manufacturer's instructions should be kept in mind.
• Stencils
For repeat patterns, stencils work best. Simply place stencil on fabric and depending on what type of fabric (dark or light), a light or dark writing utensil can be used to trace accordingly.
