Trazodone is not a benzodiazepine, according to Drugs.com. Trazodone is an antidepressant that treats chemical imbalances in the brain that are known to lead to major depressive disorder.

Brand names of benzodiazepines include Ativan and Valium, according to Drugs.com. Medications in this class act in similar manners, but some are less potent than others.

Where trazodone is prescribed for depression, benzodiazepines are used as anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, hypnotics, muscle relaxants and sedatives. An article in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatrics states that trazodone can be used instead of benzodiazepines to treat anxiety in patients who are prone to benzodiazepine abuse and addiction.
