What is the treatment for a lazy eye?

Treatment options for a lazy eye include corrective eyeglasses, surgery and eye patches, and drops that help to strengthen weak eye muscles. The medical term for a lazy eye is amblyopia.
Amblyopia is a childhood condition in which one eye tends to be stronger than the other. This causes the brain to focus the stronger eye on images at the expense of the weaker one. If the condition is left untreated, vision in the weaker eye can become worse over time. Treatments include blocking the stronger eye for a period of time and surgical and medical methods of strengthening the weaker one. Amblyopia is diagnosed through a series of tests for light detection, movement and visual balance.
