What are the treatment options for vitreous separation?

Treatment for a vitreous separation is unnecessary if the separation occurs without a retinal tear, according to Cleveland Clinic. If a retinal tear occurs, either laser surgery or a procedure called cryopexy is used to repair the tear and preserve sight.

Vitreous separation is an age-related eye condition that occurs when the vitreous humor, a gel-like substance that helps maintains the eye shape, begins to shrink and pull at the retina at the back of the eye, explains the National Eye Institute. Floaters and flashes of light in the visual field are the primary symptoms.

If the vitreous pulls strongly at the retina as it shrinks, it can cause a macular hole or a complete retinal detachment, states the National Eye Institute. Immediate treatment is required to save the person's sight.
