Hand osteorarethritis can be treated in a number of ways, including both surgical and nonsurgical options, according to WebMD. These may be used in combination to help restore mobility and decrease pain.

Hand osteoarthritis occurs when the joint cartilage in the hands starts to deteriorate. Usually, this is a result of aging, but it can also be caused by unstable and misaligned joints, trauma and inherited genetic traits.

The nonsurgical treatments for hand osteoarthritis include medications and injections, finger or wrist splints, heat treatments, exercises and rest. In more extreme cases, surgery may be needed, where either the bones are fused, or the joints are reconstructed.
