In a minority of fetal hydronephrosis cases, a doctor may need to correct a blockages or repair a valve surgically, according to WebMD. However, in most instances of hydronephrosis during pregnancy, a doctor can monitor the condition's progress closely and it corrects itself.

About 1 percent of pregnancies are complicated by hydronephrosis, which is a build-up of urine in the kidneys, notes WebMD. Doctors typically diagnosis the issue at around 20 weeks into pregnancy through a routine antenatal ultrasound. Additional scans may be necessary for both mother and child to monitor the condition, but hydronephrosis during fetal stages usually presents no further complications to the unborn child.
