The pineal gland is located in the center area of the brain and on rare occasions, tumors begin forming in the region. The tumors most often affect young adults, and it is believed they are likely caused by chromosomal abnormalities. In patients suffering from the tumors, radiation to the brain and spine is commonly administered. On few occasions, chemotherapy is an option. When surgery is an option, a patient may have a shunt put into place to alleviate pressure from the tumor.
