Squamous metaplasia is a normal condition that sometimes requires further testing, according to the University of Pennsylvania. Metaplasia refers to normal growth and repair of cells and usually does not indicate cancer. It can be present on the cervix or in other organs, such as the bladder.
Cervical metaplasia is detected by a pap smear test. More than half of women have metaplasia at some point, the University of Pennsylvania notes. Squamous metaplasia is also commonly found in the bladder, Wikipedia notes. Smokers sometimes show squamous metaplasia in their airways. The condition is usually a response to stress or irritation and is not a sign of disease.
