What are the treatments for ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts may be treated with birth control pills or with surgery, according to Healthline. Birth control pills help prevent the formation of new cysts and reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. Large, persistent or painful cysts can be removed with surgical procedures such as laparoscopy or laparotomy.
As most ovarian cysts tend to disappear on their own eventually, doctors may initially suggest "watchful waiting" for patients with a low-risk profile, during which the cyst is not treated but instead is monitored for changes, says WebMD. In the event of a cancerous cyst, a treatment plan may consist of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of these options.
