1. Wear protective clothing

   Put on protective clothing, such as a long-sleeve shirt, pants, and gloves. Protective clothing helps to protect your skin from the sharp leaf blades.

2. Trim the plant

   Cut the plant back near ground level with lopping shears, hedge shears or power pruners.

3. Apply fertilizer

   Apply a light, even distribution of a complete fertilizer (such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) to the trimmed plant to encourage new growth.
