When do you trim pine trees?

The optimal time to prune pine trees is when the new growth has completely elongated, which usually occurs in mid-June to mid-July in the United States. Pruning one-third of the new growth can encourage the tree to become fuller and bushier.
Pinching off new growth in early spring can produce too many weak shoots, and making cuts late in summer can hinder formation of buds for the following year. Most pine trees only produce new shoots from the most recent growth. It is important not to make cuts into the older and woodier stems. If more severe pruning is necessary, it is best to remove the entire branch.
