What are truck weight classes?

Trucks are generally classified as light duty, medium duty or heavy duty. As About.com explains, commercial vehicles licensed to drive in the United States are classified according to their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

According to About.com, the GVWR takes into account the maximum weight a vehicle can carry safely when fully loaded with cargo, fuel and passengers. Light-duty trucks include classes 1 through 3, which include those vehicles with a GVWR of 0 to 14,000 pounds. Trucks in classes 4 through 6 are considered medium duty and have a GVWR of 14,001 to 26,000 pounds. Heavy-duty trucks are classified in classes 7 and 8 and weigh 26,001 pounds and more.
