Tums is an over-the-counter medication that alleviates symptoms associated with acid indigestion, upset stomach, heartburn, excess gas and bloating, according to WebMD. The medication contains an antacid called calcium carbonate that reduces the level of acid in the stomach.

Tums also contains an anti-foaming agent called simethicone that works by reducing the amount of gas in the stomach. Antacid medications such as Tums should be taken orally and chewed before swallowing. Tums should not be consumed for a period of two weeks or more unless instructed to do so by a qualified physician. This medication can also be used to treat conditions such as renal osteodystrophy with hyperphosphatemia, a low amount of calcium in the blood and osteoporosis.
