In the Bible, there are several references to turtle doves being sacrificed; their sacrifice represents giving all one has to God. This pair of birds symbolizes peace and innocence.
Two turtle doves were offered in sacrifice by Jesus's mother Mary at her purification. During Biblical times, turtle doves were very common. They were offered as sacrifices by the poorest, who could not afford lambs or goats to sacrifice. The Book of Leviticus suggests them as an acceptable offering by those who cannot afford more. Although they are the sacrifice of the poor, turtle doves are regarded with admiration and praise by biblical writers.
