Most doctors are capable of treating fire ant stings. Many fire ant stings cause small itchy bumps that usually go away within an hour, notes WebMD. A mild sting causes a small fluid-filled blister to form within 24 hours of the sting. More severe cases require medical evaluation.
In rare instances, an individual may develop a severe allergic reaction to fire ant stings, reports WebMD. Symptoms include hives, tightness in the chest, swelling of the throat or tongue, and trouble breathing. These reactions require immediate medical evaluation and treatment. Severely painful or large stings may require treatment with steroids and prescription antihistamines.
