Meat, especially organ meats, and seafood are high in purines. Oatmeal, wheat bran and wheat germ are moderately high sources. Consuming large quantities of purine-rich foods on a regular basis may contribute to gout.
Organ meats, game meats and other red meats contain the highest levels of purine and can increase a person's chances of developing gout. Beer, sardines and gravy are other significant sources. Seafood, oats and wheat products contain moderately high levels of purine. Green vegetables, some dairy products, coffee, chocolate and fruit are some foods that are low in purines. Yogurt and reduced fat or fat-free milks may reduce a person's risk of developing gout.
