What type of ions have names ending in "-ide"?

Negative ions that have a single atom are named by using the suffix "-ide." Some examples of negative ions include fluoride, sulfide, oxide and carbide.
Negative ions that have more than one atom are named differently. Polyatomic negative ions that have a low oxidation state end in "-ite," such as nitrite. Polyatomic negative ions that have a high oxidation state, however, end in "-ate," such as nitrate. To show that a polyatomic negative ion has a very low oxidation state, the prefix "hypo-" is added, such as hypochlorite. Polyatomic negative ions with very high oxidation states have the prefix "per-," such as perchlorate.
