The best source of artificial light for indoor reading is full spectrum lighting, according to Eyecare 20/20. Halogen and fluorescent lighting can be harmful to eye health over time.
Full spectrum lights have a higher flicker rate than fluorescent lights. Although most people do not notice the flicker rate, a lower flicker rate can cause eye strain. Full spectrum lighting uses solid state circuitry, leading to a higher flicker rate. Full spectrum lighting attempts to imitate natural sunlight, which reduces glare and provides better color perception. Full spectrum lighting improves mood, comfort and concentration both in the workplace and in the classroom, notes Eyecare 20/20.
