What type of organism makes its own food?

An autotroph is an organism that makes its own food. An autotroph produces its own food via converting simple inorganic molecules into complex organic compounds. These complex organic compounds include proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

There are two primary types of autotrophs. Photoautotrophs utilize energy from light to create food. Chemoautotrophs make their food by producing chemical reactions. Autotrophs are oftentimes referred to as producers in the food chain. There are different types of life forms that are autotrophs. Many of these are plants like the Venus Fly Trap. Green and red algae are autotrophs. Certain types of bacteria are also classified as autotrophs.
