What type of pipe did Sherlock Holmes smoke?

In the novels, Sherlock Holmes smoked three different pipes: cherrywood, clay and briar. In theater and in film, he is often portrayed smoking a Calabash pipe. The association of Holmes with the Calabash comes from the early 1900s American actor William Gillette, who chose to play Holmes on stage using this pipe.

The first appearance of Holmes smoking a pipe is in the novel "A Study in Scarlet." His favorite of the three was his clay pipe. Holmes typically smoked a pipe when his mood was contemplative. If he was agitated, he preferred to smoke cigarettes. Holmes chose to smoke Cuban cigars when drinking brandy or after dinner at a restaurant.
