What type of plant is safe for your goldfish?

Safe plants for a goldfish in an aquarium include java ferns, sword plants (also known as Amazon swords), water sprites and banana plants. For pond goldfish, use plants like duckweed, water hyacinths, water lilies, anacharis, cabombas or bog plants.
Planted aquariums are beneficial for goldfish because they produce oxygen, which is often lacking in a tank with heavy waste producers like goldfish. Aquatic plants require full-spectrum lighting, which lets them undergo photosynthesis and release oxygen into the water as a by-product. Goldfish also use plants as cover when stressed, and they may nibble on plants as an additional food source.
