Drugs in the JWH class of compounds are synthetic cannabinoids normally sold by unscrupulous research chemical vendors, reports The Washington Post. Hundreds of JWH compounds exist, and many have been banned by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, notes Chemical and Engineering News. They are illegal for human consumption.

Most JWH compounds originate in China and are sold by bulk chemical manufacturers for repackaging in local markets. They are then mixed with herbal smoking blends and sold as potpourri or incense, reports the DEA. Legitimate chemical vendors, such as Sigma-Aldrich and Cayman Chemical, sell JWH compounds for use as forensic and analytical standards.
