Some types of cake stands and plates are pedestal cake plates, floating and tiered cake stands. Cake stands and plates are available to suit different styles of cakes.

Pedestal cake plates turn a cake into a centerpiece by holding the cake a few inches above the table with a decorative pedestal base showing below the plate. Floating cake stands feature shelves suspended at the back of the cake, which is then positioned out of sight, to give the cake's layers the appearance of floating. Tiered cake stands feature either pedestals that stack smaller layers on top of larger layers, or a decorative external frame to hold the layers in place.
