Types of chromatography are different methods of separating mixtures under laboratory conditions. There are about a dozen types of chromatography, but five are used most frequently: adsorption chromatography, partition chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, molecular exclusion chromatography and affinity chromatography.
Adsorption and partition chromatography are the oldest methods of chromatography. They work by adding a solution to the substance that causes a chemical reaction resulting in separation. Molecular exclusion chromatography work by passing the substance through a filter that separates molecules according to size and type. Ion exchange chromatography works by attaching ions to different molecules in the substance, causing them to break away.
