Cashiers at JCPenney usually make their transactions with shoppers at kiosks in the middle of a department. Other kiosks at JCPenney allow shoppers to buy merchandise from JCPenney's online inventory.

The Internet-connected kiosks also permit the shopper to view a product's availability in the store or a nearby store. Scanning a product's bar code with the kiosk shows the shopper additional information concerning the product's features and recommended pairings.

In 2009, beauty and makeup retailer Sephora tested using vending machine-style kiosks inside JCPenney. Sephora later expanded to the point of appearing as an independent department in over 400 JCPenney stores.
