Robert Wood painted American landscapes in a realistic style. Most of his paintings are oil on canvas. Wood's style was influenced by Jose Arpa, who used bright colors and realistically captured the effects of light.
Wood was prolific. He painted conventional landscapes with traditional composition and preferred picturesque subjects such as the Grand Tetons or a field of Texas bluebonnets. His works created for the market are realistic landscapes, although he also painted many watercolor sketches early in his career and many plein-air impressionistic paintings later on. Like Norman Rockwell, he was dismissed by many contemporary critics because of his commercial success and conventional approach.
