Cedar wood decks can be treated with a latex or oil-based stain. According to Consumer Reports, neither type of finish performs better than the other, but latex finishes are easier to work with.
Both latex and oil-based treatments perform similarly in regards to durability, but latex application allows for easy cleanup with water. Cedar deck stains come in a variety of opaqueness and colors. Desired wood grain visibility will help determine finish choice.
A semitransparent stain allows most of the wood grain to show through while still providing protection. The average life span of semitransparent stain is two years. A clear wood stain will showcase the grain but will need to be reapplied yearly. A solid or opaque stain completely obscures wood grain, making it a poor choice to showcase cedar.
