Some wood types that are most resistant to denting and wear are Brazilian walnut, Brazilian cherry, hickory, pecan and hard maple. White and red oak, ash, birch, and teak are also very durable woods.
North American and tropical hardwoods are generally the best options available for the production of wood flooring, cabinetry and furniture due to their strength and durability. Soft woods including cedar, fir, hemlock, pine and aspen are easy to dent and scratch. These woods are more commonly used for structural applications. Wood durability is measured on the Janka rating system, which measures relative hardness based on the pounds of pressure required to mar the wood.
