The typical civil engineering courses include, calculus, physics and statistics. Many of courses that a student will need to take will depend on what fundamental or foundation courses they may have already taken. This can include advanced placement or college-level courses taken in high school as well. This degree is a typical 4-year course, as stated by New York University's Polytechnic School of Engineering.

In addition to the required courses, students also take a predetermined number of electives each year. Each school requires a different number of credits to graduate. The University of New Hampshire requires its students to complete 130 credits in the required courses, according to the university's course advising sheet on the website. In comparison, the University of Illinois requires between 132 and 134 hours.
