The traditional cut leaves the hair long requiring more maintenance from the owner. The AKC recommends applying a coat oil to the hair to prevent breakage and damage. The shorter alternative is to have the coat trimmed or shaved into a "puppy cut" where the hair is trimmed to be very short and low maintenance resembling the way the pet looked as a puppy.
