The average annual salary of teacher assistants was $26,000 as of May 2014, as reported by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Four out of 10 teacher assistants work part time and do not work in the summer, but some work in year-round schools, as of 2012.
The top 10 percent of teacher assistants earned more than $36,680, while the lower 10 percent earned less than $17,180, states the BLS. California has the highest employment of teacher assistants with 132,120, as of May 1014, followed by New York, Texas, New Jersey and Illinois. The state with the highest paying salary for teacher assistants was Alaska with $37,440, with the next being Rhode Island at $31,670.
